Austria

Austria, officially known as the Republic of Austria or Österreich, is a charming landlocked country nestled in Central Europe, right in the heart of the Eastern Alps. It’s made up of nine states, with Vienna being not only the capital but also the largest city. Austria shares its borders with Germany to the northwest, the Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia to the northeast, Hungary to the east, and Slovenia and Italy to the south, while Switzerland and Liechtenstein sit to the west. Covering an area of 83,879 km² (32,386 sq mi), this beautiful country is home to around 9.2 million people. To use any of these motorways or expressways, drivers must purchase a motorway sticker, known as a vignette (eVignette, Autobahnvignette, Autobahn, road tax, road tolls, e-vignette, vignette, buy vignette, order vignette), which should be displayed on the car's windshield. The land we now call Austria has a rich history, with evidence of human habitation dating back to at least the Paleolithic era. By around 400 BC, the Celts had settled in the region, and it was later taken over by the Romans in the late 1st century BC. The spread of Christianity began in the 4th and 5th centuries during the waning days of the Roman Empire, followed by a wave of Germanic tribes arriving during the Migration Period.

Roads - Highways in Österreich.

The Austrian autobahns are a network of controlled-access highways throughout Austria. Officially known as Bundesstraßen A (Bundesautobahnen), they fall under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government as outlined in the Austrian Federal Road Act (Bundesstraßengesetz). It's important to note that these should not be mixed up with the older Bundesstraßen highways that have been managed by the Austrian states since 2002. For cars weighing up to 3500 kg, the maximum speed limit is set at 130 km/h. Currently, Austria boasts 18 autobahns, all built and maintained by ASFiNAG, a self-financed stock company based in Vienna. They generate revenue through road user charges and tolls. Each autobahn is assigned a number and an official name that references the local area, although these names aren’t shown on road signs. The entire Austrian Autobahn network stretches over 1,720 km (1,070 mi) and is set for expansion, with one autobahn under construction and another planned. However, the heavy transit traffic, particularly from trucks crossing the main Alpine chain, has put significant strain on the delicate Alpine ecosystem. Various action groups are advocating for a shift from road to rail for freight transport. In 1991, Austria committed to the Alpine Convention, which focuses on protecting the natural environment. In Austria, national highways are known as Bundesstrassen. The higher-capacity and faster Bundesstrassen are further divided into Autobahns and Schnellstrassen (expressways).

Transport

Austria boasts a top-notch transport system that’s both well-developed and efficient, featuring a mix of road, rail, air, and water networks. The rail system is particularly impressive, with high-speed trains zipping between major cities like Vienna, Salzburg, and Innsbruck, while regional trains cater to smaller towns. Plus, international train services make it easy to hop over to neighboring countries like Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and Hungary, making rail travel a breeze for both local and cross-border trips. When it comes to road travel, Austria shines with its well-maintained highways (Autobahns) and roads that connect every corner of the country. Driving is a popular choice, thanks to strict traffic regulations and a toll system on the major highways. For those in rural areas where trains might not reach, public buses and long-distance coaches offer great alternatives.
? In the cities, urban transport is impressively efficient. Cities like Vienna, Graz, and Linz feature extensive networks of metros (U-Bahn), trams, buses, and suburban trains (S-Bahn), ensuring that residents and visitors can rely on punctual public transport. Vienna, in particular, is celebrated for its comprehensive and user-friendly public transport system, which is a favorite among locals and tourists alike. Air travel connects Austria to the global stage, with Vienna International Airport acting as the main hub. While water transport isn’t as prominent, the Danube River does facilitate some passenger and freight movement, linking Austria with other Central and Eastern European nations. Additionally, cycling is on the rise, with dedicated bike lanes in cities and scenic routes in the countryside and the Alps, promoting both sustainable and enjoyable travel options.
