Norway, officially known as the Kingdom of Norway, is a stunning Nordic country that covers the western and northernmost regions of the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe. It also includes the remote Arctic island of Jan Mayen and the beautiful archipelago of Svalbard. While Bouvet Island, situated in the Subantarctic, is a dependency and not part of the Kingdom, Norway also lays claim to the Antarctic territories of Peter I Island and Queen Maud Land. With a population of around 5.6 million and a total area of 385,207 square kilometers (or 148,729 square miles), Norway's capital and largest city is Oslo. The country shares a lengthy eastern border with Sweden and is flanked by Finland and Russia to the northeast. Norway boasts an extensive coastline along the Skagerrak strait, the North Sea, the Norwegian Sea, and the Barents Sea.To use any of these motorways or expressways, drivers must purchase a motorway sticker, known as a vignette (eVignette, Autobahnvignette, Autobahn, road tax, road tolls, e-vignette, vignette, buy vignette, order vignette), which should be displayed on the car's windshield. The unified kingdom of Norway came into being in 872, formed from a collection of smaller kingdoms, and has been continuously established for over 1,150 years. From 1537 to 1814, Norway was part of a union with Denmark, known as Denmark–Norway, and then from 1814 to 1905, it was in a personal union with Sweden. Norway maintained a stance of neutrality during the First World War and remained neutral until April 1940 in the Second World War, when it was invaded and occupied by Nazi Germany until the war's conclusion.

Norway boasts an impressive road network stretching over 92,946 kilometers (57,754 miles), with 72,033 kilometers (44,759 miles) of that being paved and 664 kilometers (413 miles) designated as motorway. The road system is organized into four tiers: national, county, municipal, and private, with national and primary county roads clearly numbered along the way. Among these, the most significant national routes are part of the European route scheme, with the E6 running north-south across the entire country and the E39 tracing the scenic West Coast. Excitingly, an upgraded E39 coastal highway is currently in the works, aimed at enhancing the route and cutting down the driving time from 21 hours. This project is set to wrap up by 2033 and will feature a series of new tunnels and bridges, including the impressive Rogfast, a 27-kilometer (17-mile) underwater tunnel connecting Stavanger and Haugesund. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration oversees the management of national and county roads. The Gjemnessund Bridge is a key part of the Kristiansund Mainland Connection. Motorways are primarily found around the largest cities, many of which have implemented toll schemes to help fund road maintenance and development. As of 2008, there were still 130 ferry routes in operation, run by private companies under contract with the Public Roads Administration. Since the 1970s, significant investments have been made in mainland connections to reduce reliance on car ferries for crossing fjords and reaching islands. Due to limited tax funding, these tunnels and bridges are typically financed through toll fees. In winter, some mountain passes can face severe snowstorms, leading to closures or requiring vehicles to follow snowplows in a line. The most exposed mountain passes are often shut down for the entire winter season.

Transport

Transport in Norway is shaped by its unique characteristics, like a low population density, a narrow geography, and a rugged coastline. While the country has a rich history of water transport, the 20th century saw a significant rise in the importance of road, rail, and air travel. In rural areas, public transport isn't as developed due to the sparse population, but cities boast a well-established public transport system. The Norwegian Ministry of Transport and Communications oversees transportation, working through various subsidiaries. Responsibilities for public transport and certain roadways have been handed off to local counties and municipalities. Most of the infrastructure is publicly owned, but private companies handle the majority of operations, with public transport receiving subsidies to keep it accessible. On average, Norwegians spend about 70 minutes commuting each day. Back in 2008, public transport accounted for 8% of passenger travel, with road transport being the most common choice. By 2017, that figure had increased to 10%. In 2014, 22% of travel was done on foot, and 4% by bicycle. The transport sector contributed 4.1% to the gross national product and provided 6.6% of jobs in 2006. According to the World Economic Forum's Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report from 2013, Norway ranked 83rd out of 140 countries for road quality, 47th out of 122 for railroad infrastructure, 25th out of 140 for port infrastructure, and 54th out of 140 for ground transport networks.
